Saving Our Trees from Forest Pests

Thursday, March 09, 4:00-5:30 PM

Join DEC Lands and Forests Educator Erin Brady and Dr. Gary Lovett from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for a workshop on the invasive beetles that are killing our trees.

The talk will focus on the emerald ash borer, a beetle from Asia that has invaded NY and is currently infesting ash trees in Poughkeepsie. Learn about the biology of this invasive insect, how it got here, and how to determine if it is killing ash trees in your yard. Dr. Lovett will be talking about the Tree-SMART Trade initiative which identifies policy measures that will prevent the introduction of future forest pests. In addition, we will be taking a short hike to learn how to identify ash trees and look for the emerald ash borer here on the Vassar Farm and Ecological Preserve.
